DONE
I am officially finished with the big portrait project. If you read previous posts, you’ll learn all about it, as I do not care to recount them here.
What does this MEAN? It means I can try to think of something else to paint. It also means I can start looking at shows again. I think I’m scheduled to show at Annie’s Art & Frame in Ballard in July, but I will have to check.
What do I wish to paint? I am thinking of very small pieces right now. I have a lot of small canvases, 2”x2”, 4”x4” I also have a sweet setup in our front room, right in the big triple floor-to-ceiling window, comfortable viewing angle to the TV. Ah.
I should get my studio set up too.
We’ll be in touch…

Looking forward to getting back to working on some personal stuff after finishing the big commission project.
Looking forward to settling into my studio, which I have not used while working on the big project for fear of not working on it.
Still really liking these Suicide Demos.

August 2011: Victrola, Beacon Hill
Last week, I hung a small group at the Victrola cafe in Beacon Hill. It has been a long time since I have hung a show by myself, with nails instead of an inflexible cable system. I thought it turned out very nice, it is a pleasant spot, and I wish the photo was sharper.
The show will be up till the end of August. 3215 Beacon Ave S, Seattle WA.

So, production has started on my book illustration project.
50 8”x10” portraits by August 25. The first 25 are due by June 25. I am going on vacation to Vancouver for our wedding anniversary June 23, so really they’re due earlier.
It is going really well so far! Having just begun work last Sunday, I have 3 portraits completed, and 4 more in varying states of progress. With today and most of tomorrow off, I should be able to finish those and start another batch. Painting machine!
I ordered more paint today. Because I really need more paint.

Skip the Crip
I’ve finally finished a couple of tiny paintings I’d been staring at for almost two months. I have had the time to really let boredom take its course over the past week, because I hurt my knee and haven’t been able to get around or go to work.
I don’t know exactly how I hurt it. I have been a runner for years - recruited for track and cross country in high school, road races in college, and of course I rode my 1-speed all through college, and I’ve been lucky enough to be able to ride my bike to work for years. My point being that I am a very great athlete. I don’t know why my knee tweaked out on me. Now my opposite hammy hurts from compensating. 32 - is that when it goes to hell?
I cannot complain about the circumstances though. The house is tidy and cozy, TV has been of fine quality, the weather has been unbelievably nice, and the cats are very helpful (they seem to sense where I hurt, then cuddle up to my leg and purr).
My only complaint really is that I just on Monday got the green light from the book illustration camp to order supplies. So the supplies will probably arrive tomorrow - the day I’m set to return to work. I have had a whole week legitimately home sick where I could have easily knocked out maybe a dozen of these portraits that are due June 25. I’ve sketched a little though:

The book illustration thing is going great otherwise. They are sending me images of the people they need paintings of - turning out to be fairly famous humanitarian entrepreneurs for the most part - but the images have been very smiley headshots, straight-on, toothy, some even in black and white. This is my worst case scenario for portrait source material (at least they weren’t babies!) because it is tricky to not make a smiling portrait all about the TEETH. After receiving about half a dozen of the images in email, I felt the need to voice my concern about the quality of the paintings done from these types of photos versus more candid photos. And I was delighted when my contact encouraged me to try Google-searching the participants to see if there were more suitable images available online, and thanked me for my input. Phew*
So, I’ve got $700 worth of wonderful linen canvases and Williamsburg oils en route, and I’m ready to get to work!
In the meantime, I’ll be finishing up a few more very small canvases for my June show at Victrola on Pike in Capitol Hill.
